A useful website brief describes the business decision the site must support, the people making that decision, the evidence they need, and the action they should take. It also names the person who can approve content and the date by which assets and feedback can realistically arrive.
Start with a customer decision
Write one sentence about what a good-fit visitor should understand before contacting you. For example: a homeowner needs to know which counties you serve, what the first consultation includes and how to request a quote. That is more useful than asking for a site that simply looks modern. Add the two or three objections customers raise most often. Those objections often become the strongest page sections.
List what already exists
Provide the current domain, access owner, logo files, service descriptions, photographs, reviews you have permission to publish and any existing analytics. Mark an item as missing if it is missing. A designer can plan around a gap; they cannot safely assume permission to use a photo or copy details from an outdated listing. Include any business facts that must stay exact, such as service area and contact details.
Define scope and decisions
State the pages you expect, the main enquiry route, whether content needs writing, and who will consolidate feedback. Include accessibility goals and who will check them before launch. Separate must-haves from ideas for a later phase. If three partners can each request changes, identify one final approver. A practical brief ends with budget range, desired launch window and constraints, not a pixel-by-pixel design prescription.
Put it into practice
- Name the primary customer and next action.
- Attach existing assets and identify missing material.
- Nominate one person to approve scope and content.
